Day Forty Seven Brockville

The forecast rain did not arrive which meant that I could get another walk in.  I finished walking the streets of Brockville and walked 13 streets.

598. McCurdy Street
599. Statham Street
600. Herron Street
601. Caldwell Street
602. Barton Street
603. Nutsford Street
604. Brockville Road
605. Grigor Street
606. Travers Street
607. Sanda Street
608. McDonald Street
609. Domigan Street
610. Saunders Street

I started my walk by walking down Wray Street which I had walked most of yesterday.  There are expansive views from Wray Street, that encompass much of the city, including the harbour and peninsula as far as Harbour Cone.

There are two parts of Brockville, one side looks over the city with many of the streets having great views of the city. Then I walked around to the other side of the hill which has views looking over rural farm land and towards Flagstaff which was covered in fog today.

I found it interesting that the houses of Brockville  end at the intersection of Brockville Road and Dalziel Road.  On one side of the intersection is residential houses and on the other is open farm land and water department land.

Brockville borders the Mount Grand reservoir where most of Dunedin's drinking water is treated.  The city's drinking water comes from Deep Creek and Deep Steam, piped to Mount Grand where it is treated before traveling through pipes to peoples homes in Dunedin.

During my walk of Brockville, I passed a large Gum tree in the grounds of Brockville School.  I have seen this tree on the skyline often during my walks of the city streets.

I passed two painted telephone cabinets on my walk today.  The first is painted with native kowhai flowers and seeds.  What was particularly interesting is that directly behind the kowhai cabinet is a kowhai tree.  The other telephone cabinet is painted in a style that reminds me of Doctor Seuss books.

Day Forty Six Glenross

I took advantage of a warm, sunny evening to get a walk in before the forecast rain this week.  Today I walked 9 streets.

589. Ettrick Street
590. Glenross Street
591. Colquhoun Street
592. Charters Street
593. Sretlaw Place
594. Turnbull Street
595. Tracey Street
596. Wray Street
597. Cockerall Street

Starting partway up Brockville Road, I started my walk by heading down the hill to Kaikorai Valley Road.  I turned off onto Ettrick Street which is a dead end street that goes from houses at the beginning and then narrows onto what almost looks like rural farm land.  It was hard to believe that a busy main road was only a couple of hundred metres from where I took this photo.

Once at the bottom of Brockville Road, I turned onto Glenross Street and started walking back up the hill.  Glenross Street has good views looking towards Wakari and the green trees of Frasers Gully.  It was only a couple of days ago that I remember standing in the street by the houses in the centre of this picture looking towards Brockville where I am now walking.

I was enjoying my walk up the hill today and it was good to have a breather in Stretlaw Street where I was rewarded with great views looking towards Mt Cargill.

As I walked further up the hill and onto Turnbull Street I could look over to Halfway Bush and the streets that I had walked two days ago.  The residents of the houses on the other side of hill border Frasers Gully.

After Turnbull Street, I crossed Brockville Road and walked around Cockerell Street.  Cockerell Street residents have fantastic views looking down to Kaikorai Valley and over to Roslyn with the sea beyond.  I really enjoyed looking at the view as I have walked all the streets that I could see.

And finally I got to walk back down Brockville Road to where I had started.  Being on the hill, Brockville gets great views that encompass different parts of the city.

Some interesting things I saw today on my walk was this neat letterbox's  mosaic post.  Someone has gone to a lot of trouble and they have done a great job and I think this bus stop has been very well painted with a map of Brockville.

The other thing that I noticed were the trees changing colours.  Autumn is here and the display of colours is quite stunning.

Day Forty Five Kaikorai

The streets I walked today completed an area that I have been walking the last few days.  Today I walked 11 streets.

578. Ferntree Drive
579. Dean Street
580. County Road
581. Ayr Street
582. Wairoa Street
583. Chapel Street
584. Swanson Street
585. Culloden Street
586. Greenock Street
587. Fife Street
588. Nairn Street

The residents of Dean Street, County Road and Waiora Street have a large green space which is a good place for playing and dog exercising.  It looks like it is part of land that can not be built on and an added bonus of the open area are good views looking towards Roslyn.

The good views of Roslyn continued on most of the streets I walked today.  I have walked all the streets that I could see on the hills opposite and it is a good feeling knowing that I don't have to walk them again as some were quite steep.

The streets that I walked today wound their way around the side of hill with a diverse range of streets ranging with some being wide and others quite narrow with very little parking .

There were a couple interesting things I saw on my walk today.  The first was this large tree in Ferntree Drive.  It is such a significant tree that the footpath is extended around it and out into the road.

And the other is this clever cow letterbox.  It is a very happy looking cow.

Day Forty Four Halfway Bush

Today was one of my shorter walks as I finished walking all of the streets in Halfway Bush.  I walked 8 streets today.

570. Balmain Street
571. Tilburn Street
572. Ashmore Street
573. Mooltan Street
574. Ellersley Street
575. Lincoln Street
576. Blake Street
577. Bonar Street

Halfway Bush has great views and I was able to see as far as the harbour and Waverly where I had started walking weeks ago.  There is a large part of Halfway Bush that is open green space where the power lines travel through.

Halfway Bush borders Frasers Gully with the area being lucky to have easy access to the walking tracks that wander through native bush right on their door step.  By following the walking trails you can walk down the hill to Kaikorai Valley.

The streets of Halfway Bush are in the shape of two almost full circles with some short cul-de-sacs that are easy to walk. The updated map shows all the streets I have walked in red.  It does not include Middlemarch or Aramoana streets.  I have completed walking most of the hill suburbs.

Day Forty Three Halfway Bush

The weather had been foggy and I had thought I'd give walking a miss but then during dinner it cleared and off I went.  Today I walked 9 streets

561. Salmond Street
562. Strode Street
563. Stephen Street
564. Gilkson Street
565. Spiers Road
566. Fenwick Street
567. Turner Street
568. Taieri Road
569. Colinsay Street

Today I was walking on some of the highest streets I have walked so far.  I was reward with fantastic views on Salmond Street, looking over other hill suburbs, and being able to see as far as the harbour and the peninsula.

After walking my way around Gilkinson Street and it's side streets, I was onto walking Taieri Road.  One of the side streets off Taieri Road that I walked was Spiers Road.  Spiers Road also happens to be the highest street I have walked so far.

Spiers Road is a little known alternative access to Flagstaff.  Once past the sealed road, you continue up the gravel road until you cross a stile over a fence then follow the marked trail all the way to the top.  The Spiers Road track is about 2km in length and is a 'paper road' that crosses farmland so expect to encounter live stock and gorse.

After Spiers Road, I continued walking along Taieri Road to where it joins Three Mile Hill.  This was my turn around point and I walked back along the other side of Taieri Road to walk some more side streets

Taieri Road is the end of city before heading over Three Mile Hill to Mosgiel.  The last few houses on Taieri Road have an outlook over farmland towards Brockville.  It is also one suburb that is sure to get snow during winter.

Day Forty Two Wakari

Looking back over the map, I noticed that I missed off counting Balmacewan Road.  Balmacewan Road is quite a long street and I started walking it a couple of weeks ago and have walked different parts of it since then.  Yesterday I finished walking the 'missing' parts of Balmacewan Road and since I haven't counted it already, I will count it as my first street for today.  I walked 10 streets today.

551. Balmacewan Road
552. Helensburgh Road
553. Hood Street
554. Gibson Street
555. Kempthorne Place
556. Wakari Road
557. Hanlon Street
558. Kohu Place
559. Kereru Close
560. Raoulia Close

I completed a few long streets today, streets that I had walked parts of earlier, Balmacewan Road being one and Helensburgh Road being another.  From Helensburgh Road, I walked down Hood Street then back up again taking a breather to walk along Kempthorne Place which is a reasonably new subdivision with great views looking towards Brockville where I have not walked yet.

The residents of Kempthorne Place not only get great views of Brockville, they also get excellent views looking down to Kaikorai Valley (where I have already walked).

Next I walked up part of Taieri Road so I could finish walking Wakari Road which is also another long street and I have walked parts of already.  Waikari Road looks straight towards Mt Cargill with Flagstaff on the left. I didn't realise how much Waikari Road climbs up and down until I stood here to look back where I had walked.

From Wakari Road, I walked three shorter cul-de-sac's, each with fantastic views.  Kohu Place and Raoulia Close look towards Mt Cargill.

While Kereru Close looks toward Wakari and the streets that I have been walking over the last couple of days.

An interesting thing I passed on my walk today was another painted bus stop.  This one is beside a dog exercise park and is aptly painted with dogs on it.

There is a power substation on Waikari Road and what I noticed about the streets surrounding it, are the houses built amongst the pylons and under the high voltage power lines.

And finally for today I am including the Google map of Dunedin with the streets I have walked in red.  I have walked most of the hill suburbs with the flat of city centre and South Dunedin still to walk as well as the suburbs on the peninsula, towards Port Chalmers and towards Mosgiel.  Phew, there are still plenty more streets for me to walk.

Day Forty One Helensburgh

It was another lovely day to be out walking the streets and I walked 15 streets today.

536. Pioneer Crescent
537. Derwent Street
538. Caleb Place
539. Joshua Place
540. Honeystone Street
541. Larkins Street
542. Tuckett Street
543. Centennial Avenue
544. Mayfield Avenue
545. Holyrood Avenue
546. Lynn Street
547. Strathern Avenue
548. Jason Street
549. Upland Street
550. Blantyre Road

I started my walk on Helensburgh Road but I still have quite a lot of Helensburgh Road to walk so I can't count it towards my street total yet but it is worth mentioning because this part of Helensburgh Road runs beside a creek.  It would be very pleasant living in this part of Helensburgh Road with all the green trees surrounding the creek.

Part of my walk took me along Wakari Road to Caleb Place and Joshua Place where the residents have farmland and Flagstaff on their backdoor

During my walk I walked up Honeystone Street which borders the edge of farmland on Flagstaff.  The views from here were worth the rest stop to catch my breath.

After my post yesterday about never getting lost in Dunedin when you can see Mt Cargill, I was able to see Mt Cargill from Larkins Street.

The other reason that you can never get lost in Dunedin is that if you can't see Mt Cargill, then you can see Flagstaff (and often you can see both!) Flagstaff is the hill in the background of this photo. The best views of Dunedin city are from the top of Flagstaff.

This is the view from Flagstaff.  It is great to look at this view and know that I have walked most of the city that I can see.  There is still a lot of Dunedin that I need to walk but for the main part, I have walked most of the city centre in this photo.  I did not walk to Flagstaff today but I am showing this picture taken from a couple of days ago.

On my walk today I passed two painted telephone cabinets.  I love how the city has embraced the painted telephone cabinet and use them as 'public art'

Today I saw one of the funniest things I have seen on my walks and I had to stop and look twice to make sure I was seeing what I thought I had seen the first time I looked.  Why anyone would choose to build half a bicycle into the wall of their house I do not know but it is certainly a little unusual.

There were two letterboxes that caught my attention during my walk today.  The first is this courier van letterbox that (I imagine) belongs to a house owned by a courier driver and the other is this American style barn.

Otago Harbour Cycleway 30 October 2023

With my sister in town, it seemed a shame to waste a calm, sunny day so the two of us hopped on a bike each to enjoy the recently opened 32k...
