Day 107 Mosgiel

Today I walked the streets that I had missed during the last couple of days.  I walked 14 streets in Mosgiel today.

1429. Braemar Street
1430. Perth Street
1431. Tay Street
1432. Souter Street
1433. Tyne Street
1434. Melville Street
1435. Graham Street
1436. Watt Street
1437. Kura Place
1438. Stirling Crescent
1439. Ross Street
1440. Lorne Street
1441. William James Close
1442. Nairn Street

After looking at the map of streets that I had walked in Mosgiel, I saw that there were a couple of gaps where I had missed walking some streets.  This is the first time that I have had to go back to an area that I have already walked to cover streets that I have missed.
As with other days of walking in Mosgiel, the only view I got was of Saddle Hill in the distance.

Or in the other direction, I was able to see Flagstaff in the distance.  As Mosgiel is on the flat of the Taieri it is surrounded by Saddle Hill, Flagstaff and Maungatua.

One of the nice things about walking the streets at this time of year is all the rhododendrons and azaleas  are out and the colours are magnificent.  Dunedin and Mosgiel have an ideal climate for growing rhododendrons and it is evident with the range of colours and size of plants that I have seen on my walks.

Below is the map of Mosgiel with the streets that I have walked in red. Looking at the map, I can see that I have walked more than half the streets in Mosgiel.
Distance walked:  6 km         Walking time  1 hr 03 mins

Total distance: 883.3  km          Total walking  165 hr 06 mins

Day 106 Mosgiel

There are still quite a few streets to walk in Mosgiel and today I walked 22 streets

1407. Hartstonge Avenue
1408. Dey Street
1409. Dryden Street
1410. Morrison Street
1411. Elgin Place
1412. Rentons Road
1413. Walnut Place
1414. Maple Grove
1415. Cherry Drive
1416. Kanuka Court
1417. Alpine Close
1418. Fushia Place
1419. Titri Place
1420. Morven Street
1421. Kintyre Place
1422. Solway Place
1423. Fenty Place
1424. Rowan Place
1425. Peat Place
1426. Oban Street
1427. Reid Avenue
1428. Murray Street

Back in Mosgiel today and I must admit, it is getting a little monotonous as the streets are all starting to look the same - long, flat and straight.

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked down a side street and most of the streets were short cul-de-sacs.  This made walking much more interesting and I was able to walk a number of streets in a short amount of time compared to the long, straight streets that I have been walking up until now.
This part of Mosgiel is newer with underground power with nice lantern type street lights.  Some of the streets are brick lined and there are lots of trees making the area very pleasant to walk through.

Cherry Tree Drive was another lovely street to walk as the grass verge and most houses have beautiful cherry trees in blossom.  The trees were covered in beautiful pale pink fluffy blossom with blossom carpeting the ground.
And of course a walk in Mosgiel would not be complete without a view of Saddle Hill in the distance.

This has to be one of the more unusual things I have seen on my challenge to walk every street in Dunedin.  I saw what looks to be a tail of a plane that has done a nose dive into someone's garden.  I had to ask myself  'why?' and wondered about the story behind it.

Another unusual thing I walked past was this 'person' cleverly created from flower pots. This certainly bought a smile to my face.
There were two interesting letterboxes on my walk today.  One is built up with schist stones to look a bit like a mountain while the other is more of an old style letterbox.

And lastly, this is map shows the streets in red that I have been walking the last few days.  As you can see there are a couple of areas where I have missed walking which means that I need to go back and complete walking these areas.
Distance walked:  8 km         Walking time  1 hr 26 mins

Total distance: 877.3  km          Total walking  164 hr 03 mins

Day 105 Mosgiel

My goal for this evenings walk was to complete more streets in Mosgiel and I walked 14 streets.

1393. Brown Street
1394. Bush Road
1395. Aitken Place
1396. Carlyle Road
1397. Mallard Place
1398. Goodall Street
1399. Silverstream Drive
1400. Glen Place
1401. Esk Place
1402. Duff Place
1403. Eden Street
1404. Gordon Road
1405. Forth Street
1406. Forfar Street

While I walked nearly 10km tonight, I didn't take many photos as I was again walking the flat streets of Mosgiel.  One of the good things about this walk was that I managed to finish walking some of the long streets which I had walked parts of over the last three days of walking.

About the only view I saw tonight was Saddle Hill.  Tonight there was no cloud covering the hill and I have enjoyed seeing it from this angle.

I walked along the streets that bordered the Silver Stream walkway.  This walkway runs alongside the Silver Stream This small stream starts on the southern slopes of the Silver Peaks and flows for 30km

One street I walked in Mosgiel is lined with lovely blossom trees and the ground is carpeted in pink blossom.  If I had been here a few weeks earlier, the trees would have been spectacular.
This is the first painted telephone cabinet that I have seen in Mosgiel.  It painted with the three layers of the land, the base with rocks followed by trees and finally the hills and mountains.  A bit unusual I thought as Mosgiel is so flat.

Distance walked:  9.8 km         Walking time  1 hr 47 mins

Total distance: 869.3  km          Total walking  162 hr 37 mins

Day 104 Mosgiel

Today I was back walking the streets of Mosgiel where I walked 11 streets.

1382. Park Street
1383. Bishop Verdon Close
1384. Laing Street
1385. Cargill Street
1386. Church Street
1387. Glasgow Street
1388. Irvine Street
1389. Argyle Street
1390. Lanark Street
1391. Montrose Street
1392. Berwick Street

Like yesterday, the streets I walked today are long, straight and flat.  Today there was cloud/fog covering most of Saddle Hill.
Whichever direction I walked today, the views were pretty much the same.  Walking the flat can become monotonous as each street starts to look the same and I need to concentrate to make sure that I don't miss any streets.

I walked all of Church Street today and in Church Street is this impressive Presbyterian Church dating back to 1912, which I am guessing the street is named after.  It looks like there have been some modern touches added with the glass front.

Also in Church Street is the St Mary's School.  Originally founded in 1892, the catholic school was held in the church until 1912 when this building was available and the school with around 50 students moved in.  In the 1950's the roll had grown and a new school was built nearby.

Another interesting building that I walked past is the old fire station that has been turned into a theatre and is home to the Taieri Dramatic Society. Founded in 1949, the Taieri Dramatic Society held two shows a year in the Mosgiel Coronation Hall until it purchased the old fire station in 1989 and now has it's own home.

I walked past this tanawha painted on the side of a building.  Maori legend has it that Saddle Hill is the remains of the tanawha Matamata which was the guardian of a Maori chief and warrior who lived in a village beside the Otago Harbour. You can see that the back and head of the tanawha are in the shape of Saddle Hill.
I also walked past this wall that is a beautifully painted ANZAC memorial.  The painting is very large as the soldiers are painted in life size.
I have not seen many interesting letterboxes lately so I was very pleased to see this fun All Blacks letterbox during my walk today.
This map shows the streets I have walked in red.  It is easy to see how many streets in Mosgiel I have walked compared to the streets that I still need to walk.
Distance walked:  8.5 km         Walking time  1 hr 30 mins

Total distance: 859.5  km          Total walking  160 hr 50 mins

Day 103 Mosgiel

Today I started walking the streets on the flat part of Mosgiel and I walked another 15 streets.

1367. Ayr Street
1368. Emlen Place
1369. Hall Street
1370. Mure Street
1371. King Street
1372. Inglis Street
1373. McDonald Street
1374. Shaw Street
1375. Dutton Place
1376. Steven Place
1377. Ashton Street
1378. Burns Street
1379. Duke Street
1380. Bruce Street
1381. Queen Street

I started my walk at the railway line.  Yesterday I walked the streets on the right of the railway line and today, I was walking streets on the left of the railway line.

And once past the railway line, the streets were long, straight and flat.   Mosgiel is named after Mossgiel Farm in Ayrshire,Scotland which was the farm of the poet Robert Burns whose nephew Thomas Burns was a co-founder of the region in 1848.

While walking these streets, I was able to look over to Saddle Hill where I could easily see the reason for the name.  Saddle Hill is one of only two places in Otago to have been named by Captain James Cook during his 1769 voyage of discovery.  According to Maori legend the hill is the remains of a tanawha.

The view of Saddle Hill is the only view I saw today and because the streets in this part of Mosgiel are set out in a grid, I needed to keep track of which streets I had walked so I didn't walk them twice.

Some of the streets end at a farm fence.  I imagine that over time, there will be new houses built in this area but at the moment, it is a lovely peaceful looking place.

It was nice to see the farm paddocks which broke up the monotony of walking the long, straight streets of Mosgiel.  In this part of Mosgiel, there are some very royal streets with names such as King Street, Queen Street and Duke Street.

I walked past this plaque which commemorates the site of the home built for Arthur Burns in 1850.  Arthur Burns was the son of Thomas Burns who was one of the co-founders of the region.  Arthur Burns founded the Mosgiel Woolen Mills and was a member of the New Zealand House of Representatives

One interesting thing I walked past today was this 'Beautiful Street' competition sign from 1992.  I have only seen a couple of these signs during my walk.  Most of the poles that these signs were attached to have been replaced over the years.

While walking the streets of Mosgiel, I walked past these two fun advertising 'statues'.  The tin man is made from exhaust parts and the other tyre bear was outside a tyre shop.

Below is the map of Mosgiel and the streets we have walked are in red.  Today we walked the grid of streets on the left while the red streets at the bottom of the map are where I was walking yesterday.

Distance walked:  10.3 km         Walking time  1 hr 50 mins

Total distance: 851  km          Total walking  159 hr 20 mins

Day 102 East Mosgiel

After enjoying a couple of evening walks near the harbour, I headed back out to Mosgiel for a longer walk where I walked 15 streets.

1352. Cemetery Road
1353. Clachan Gange Road
1354. Jollie Lane
1355. McGlashan Street
1356. Gow Street
1357. Gladstone Road South
1358. McFadden Drive
1359. Joe Brown Avenue
1360. Heathfield Drive
1361. Calluna Crescent
1362. Erica Crescent
1363. Irwin Logan Drive
1364. Pinfold Place
1365. Prudence Place
1366. Gladstone Road North

I started my walk today on another of the long straight roads of Mosgiel.  This one ran for approximately 3.5km in a straight line.  Thankfully there were a few side streets that I walked, otherwise, I would have only walked two streets today.

Part of my walk today, included the streets of the industrial area of Mosgiel.  These streets are wide and, as it is the weekend, empty. I would imagine that this is a busy area during the week.

Most of Mosgiel is flat but today I walked up some of the few streets that get a view.  These houses look towards the Chain Hills where there are new houses being built.
As I walked further around the hill, I was rewarded with views looking over Mosgiel.  I have walked none of these streets yet and it was good to get a chance to look over the streets that I will be walking next.

A little further around the hill, I was able to see Saddle Hill.  This is the first time that I have seen it from this direction, where I can start to see why it has the name Saddle Hill.

Once I had walked back down the hill, I was able to look back up to the streets where I had been walking.

The next part of my walk was through a new subdivision where the streets have been laid out and no houses built yet. It won't be long before this area is full of houses.

As I walked further into the subdivision, I was able to see over the part where most of the houses have already been built.

As I walked back down to the flat, I was able to look over towards Saddle Hill.  I had enjoyed walking the streets on the hill.

And then I was back to walking the long, straight road to finish my walk.

I was quite excited to be walking along beside the train line when a train came past on it's way south.  The train was quite long and I could feel the power and size of it as it gather speed.

After seeing the train go past, further along the road I walked past the Mosgiel train station. This station was built in 1875.  While trains still travel down the track, past the station, the station is not used anymore.  It has most recently been used as a function centre but it is looking deserted now.

One of the footpaths that I walked today is a shared cycle/walkway.  The power poles were once on the edge of the footpath, however to make it wide enough for both cyclists and walkers, the footpath was widened.  This leaves the power poles in the middle of the footpath, making it difficult for cyclists (and walkers) who aren't paying attention.

One of the streets I walked down today was called Cemetery Road and not surprisingly, there was a cemetery.  The cemetery was overseen by a lovely church (seen in the distance).  The East Taieri Church was built in 1853 and has some beautiful stained glass windows.
At the start to the subdivision, is this beautiful big Oak tree.

Distance walked:  12.9 km         Walking time  2hr 29mins

Total distance: 840.7 km          Total walking  157 hr 30 mins

Otago Harbour Cycleway 30 October 2023

With my sister in town, it seemed a shame to waste a calm, sunny day so the two of us hopped on a bike each to enjoy the recently opened 32k...
