Day 110 Mosgiel

My plan today was that if I have a longer walk, I would be able  to finish walking the streets of Mosgiel.  I walked 27 streets today.

1470. High Street
1471. Green Street
1472. Victoria Street
1473. Wickliffe Street
1474. Tudor Lane
1475. Kent Place
1476. Windsor Place
1477. Haggart Alexander Drive
1478. Balmoral Avenue
1479. Owhiro Avenue
1480. Glenimire Close
1481. Tuwhare Lane
1482. Beech Street
1483. Cedar Crescent
1484. Oak Place
1485. Elmwood Drive
1486. Ash Place
1487 Cornish Lane
1488. Doon Street
1489. Spey Street
1490. Dunbar Place
1491. Gretna Place
1492. Arran Street
1493. Lomond Place
1494. Kelso Place
1495. Glenbrook Drive
1496. Glenleigh Place

I have become used to seeing Saddle Hill from this angle and today is the last day of walking streets that I will Saddle Hill from this angle as my goal for the day is to finish walking the streets of Mosgiel.

I walked a mixture of streets of long, straight streets and shorter, curved streets.  The long, straight streets were wide and tended to have older houses

While the shorter, curved streets had newer houses and tended to have more trees and grass verges.

Most of the streets I walked today had a view of Saddle Hill.  I have enjoyed seeing Saddle Hill, occasionally it has been covered in cloud although mostly, like today, I have had an excellent view of it.

Some of the newer subdivisions have a view of the Chain Hills and have lots of landscaping on the surrounding streets which makes them very enjoyable streets to walk though.

I walked past a number of playgrounds and sports fields today.  Mosgiel has a lot of playgrounds and sports fields and it has been great when I have come across these open, green spaces as it has given me the opportunity to see something other than streets and houses.

Today I walked past Taieri College.  Taieri College started in 1871 when it was known as Mosgiel District High School and by 1882, there were over 170 students at the high school. In 2004, the high school merged with Mosgiel Intermediate to become Taieri College and now has over 1200 students. This year is the schools 150th anniversary.

I walked past some interesting letterboxes today.  I really liked the one painted with New Zealand's native birds and I thought the one with the 'person' leaning on the letterbox was clever.

And finally, after 10 days and 93.5km of walking, I have completed walking the streets of Mosgiel.

Distance walked:  13.2 km         Walking time  2 hr 16 mins

Total distance: 911.4  km          Total walking  170 hr 01 mins

Day 109 Highland Park

Another day that I am walking streets in Mosgiel and I walked 14 streets today.

1456. Factory Road
1457. Wingatui Road
1458. Ben Lomand Drive
1459. Dundee Road
1460. Kinloch Place
1461. Ayshire Drive
1462. Windermere Drive
1463. Carnoustie Lane
1464. Thornley Park Avenue
1465. Lochinvar Street
1466. Smiley Place
1467. Carrick Place
1468. Stratton Way
1469. Armadale Street

I started my walk today on one of the long, straight roads that borders the edge of Mosgiel.  On one side is farmland and the other is densely built houses.
Then I was into walking the streets of another new area of Mosgiel.  The township of Mosgiel has certainly grown over the last few years as farmland has been subdivided and new houses built.
The new streets are nicely planted with trees and grass verges.  This area of Mosgiel has large houses built on small sections with all the lawns nicely mowed.

There are some lovely green spaces built into the new areas and I have enjoyed walking in this part of Mosgiel.

One thing I noticed about the houses in this new area of Mosgiel.  The letterboxes are solidly built and have been built from the same materials as the houses.

This map shows the streets I have walked in Mosgiel highlighted in red.  There is a part in the middle that I will be walking next.

Distance walked:  7.4 km         Walking time  1 hr 20 mins

Total distance: 898.2  km          Total walking  167 hr 45 mins

Day 108 Mosgiel

Today I was walking in a part of Mosgiel with newer houses and I walked 13 streets

1443. Thames Street
1444. Severn Street
1445. Centre Street
1446. Silver Springs Boulevard
1447. Anderton Crescent
1448. Marjorie Lane
1449. Melley Mews
1450. Showgate Crescent
1451. Copperfield Close
1452. Didham Drive
1453. Caledonia Drive
1454. Cavan Place
1455. Rutherford Road

Back in Mosgiel and I was walking some of the straight streets again.  One thing that I have noticed about the streets that I have been walking lately is that they have been wide with plenty of parking.
And when I walked through the area with new houses, the streets were shorter and curved more with Saddle Hill dominating the view.

The streets in the newer part of Mosgiel are pretty with plenty of green trees and grass.  It is a much more interesting area to walk in than the long, straight streets of that I have been walking over the last few days.

I walked over Silver Stream which I have been walking near for a few days now.  Part of Mosgiel runs along beside Silver Stream with a walkway running between the houses and the stream.
Looking the other way, Silver Stream looks peaceful as it emerges from the trees.  Silver Stream runs for 30km  from the southern slopes of the Silver Peaks.
Bordering on the edge of Mosgiel is the Taieri Aerodrome which was once the most southerly Royal New Zealand Air Force flying station during World War II and is now home to the Otago Aero Club.  The Otago Aero Club is the oldest aero club in New Zealand, dating back to 1927.  The Aerodrome is also the home base for the Otago Rescue Helicopter.
Some of the cul-de-sacs in this area are planted with trees and have tables where the residents can meet up in the evenings.

I walked past this unusual letterbox today.  It is quite apt being beside a private street called Aviation Lane and very close to the Taieri Aerodrome.

Distance walked:  7.5 km         Walking time  1 hr 19 mins

Total distance: 890.8  km          Total walking  166 hr 25 mins

Day 107 Mosgiel

Today I walked the streets that I had missed during the last couple of days.  I walked 14 streets in Mosgiel today.

1429. Braemar Street
1430. Perth Street
1431. Tay Street
1432. Souter Street
1433. Tyne Street
1434. Melville Street
1435. Graham Street
1436. Watt Street
1437. Kura Place
1438. Stirling Crescent
1439. Ross Street
1440. Lorne Street
1441. William James Close
1442. Nairn Street

After looking at the map of streets that I had walked in Mosgiel, I saw that there were a couple of gaps where I had missed walking some streets.  This is the first time that I have had to go back to an area that I have already walked to cover streets that I have missed.
As with other days of walking in Mosgiel, the only view I got was of Saddle Hill in the distance.

Or in the other direction, I was able to see Flagstaff in the distance.  As Mosgiel is on the flat of the Taieri it is surrounded by Saddle Hill, Flagstaff and Maungatua.

One of the nice things about walking the streets at this time of year is all the rhododendrons and azaleas  are out and the colours are magnificent.  Dunedin and Mosgiel have an ideal climate for growing rhododendrons and it is evident with the range of colours and size of plants that I have seen on my walks.

Below is the map of Mosgiel with the streets that I have walked in red. Looking at the map, I can see that I have walked more than half the streets in Mosgiel.
Distance walked:  6 km         Walking time  1 hr 03 mins

Total distance: 883.3  km          Total walking  165 hr 06 mins

Day 106 Mosgiel

There are still quite a few streets to walk in Mosgiel and today I walked 22 streets

1407. Hartstonge Avenue
1408. Dey Street
1409. Dryden Street
1410. Morrison Street
1411. Elgin Place
1412. Rentons Road
1413. Walnut Place
1414. Maple Grove
1415. Cherry Drive
1416. Kanuka Court
1417. Alpine Close
1418. Fushia Place
1419. Titri Place
1420. Morven Street
1421. Kintyre Place
1422. Solway Place
1423. Fenty Place
1424. Rowan Place
1425. Peat Place
1426. Oban Street
1427. Reid Avenue
1428. Murray Street

Back in Mosgiel today and I must admit, it is getting a little monotonous as the streets are all starting to look the same - long, flat and straight.

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked down a side street and most of the streets were short cul-de-sacs.  This made walking much more interesting and I was able to walk a number of streets in a short amount of time compared to the long, straight streets that I have been walking up until now.
This part of Mosgiel is newer with underground power with nice lantern type street lights.  Some of the streets are brick lined and there are lots of trees making the area very pleasant to walk through.

Cherry Tree Drive was another lovely street to walk as the grass verge and most houses have beautiful cherry trees in blossom.  The trees were covered in beautiful pale pink fluffy blossom with blossom carpeting the ground.
And of course a walk in Mosgiel would not be complete without a view of Saddle Hill in the distance.

This has to be one of the more unusual things I have seen on my challenge to walk every street in Dunedin.  I saw what looks to be a tail of a plane that has done a nose dive into someone's garden.  I had to ask myself  'why?' and wondered about the story behind it.

Another unusual thing I walked past was this 'person' cleverly created from flower pots. This certainly bought a smile to my face.
There were two interesting letterboxes on my walk today.  One is built up with schist stones to look a bit like a mountain while the other is more of an old style letterbox.

And lastly, this is map shows the streets in red that I have been walking the last few days.  As you can see there are a couple of areas where I have missed walking which means that I need to go back and complete walking these areas.
Distance walked:  8 km         Walking time  1 hr 26 mins

Total distance: 877.3  km          Total walking  164 hr 03 mins

Day 105 Mosgiel

My goal for this evenings walk was to complete more streets in Mosgiel and I walked 14 streets.

1393. Brown Street
1394. Bush Road
1395. Aitken Place
1396. Carlyle Road
1397. Mallard Place
1398. Goodall Street
1399. Silverstream Drive
1400. Glen Place
1401. Esk Place
1402. Duff Place
1403. Eden Street
1404. Gordon Road
1405. Forth Street
1406. Forfar Street

While I walked nearly 10km tonight, I didn't take many photos as I was again walking the flat streets of Mosgiel.  One of the good things about this walk was that I managed to finish walking some of the long streets which I had walked parts of over the last three days of walking.

About the only view I saw tonight was Saddle Hill.  Tonight there was no cloud covering the hill and I have enjoyed seeing it from this angle.

I walked along the streets that bordered the Silver Stream walkway.  This walkway runs alongside the Silver Stream This small stream starts on the southern slopes of the Silver Peaks and flows for 30km

One street I walked in Mosgiel is lined with lovely blossom trees and the ground is carpeted in pink blossom.  If I had been here a few weeks earlier, the trees would have been spectacular.
This is the first painted telephone cabinet that I have seen in Mosgiel.  It painted with the three layers of the land, the base with rocks followed by trees and finally the hills and mountains.  A bit unusual I thought as Mosgiel is so flat.

Distance walked:  9.8 km         Walking time  1 hr 47 mins

Total distance: 869.3  km          Total walking  162 hr 37 mins

Day 104 Mosgiel

Today I was back walking the streets of Mosgiel where I walked 11 streets.

1382. Park Street
1383. Bishop Verdon Close
1384. Laing Street
1385. Cargill Street
1386. Church Street
1387. Glasgow Street
1388. Irvine Street
1389. Argyle Street
1390. Lanark Street
1391. Montrose Street
1392. Berwick Street

Like yesterday, the streets I walked today are long, straight and flat.  Today there was cloud/fog covering most of Saddle Hill.
Whichever direction I walked today, the views were pretty much the same.  Walking the flat can become monotonous as each street starts to look the same and I need to concentrate to make sure that I don't miss any streets.

I walked all of Church Street today and in Church Street is this impressive Presbyterian Church dating back to 1912, which I am guessing the street is named after.  It looks like there have been some modern touches added with the glass front.

Also in Church Street is the St Mary's School.  Originally founded in 1892, the catholic school was held in the church until 1912 when this building was available and the school with around 50 students moved in.  In the 1950's the roll had grown and a new school was built nearby.

Another interesting building that I walked past is the old fire station that has been turned into a theatre and is home to the Taieri Dramatic Society. Founded in 1949, the Taieri Dramatic Society held two shows a year in the Mosgiel Coronation Hall until it purchased the old fire station in 1989 and now has it's own home.

I walked past this tanawha painted on the side of a building.  Maori legend has it that Saddle Hill is the remains of the tanawha Matamata which was the guardian of a Maori chief and warrior who lived in a village beside the Otago Harbour. You can see that the back and head of the tanawha are in the shape of Saddle Hill.
I also walked past this wall that is a beautifully painted ANZAC memorial.  The painting is very large as the soldiers are painted in life size.
I have not seen many interesting letterboxes lately so I was very pleased to see this fun All Blacks letterbox during my walk today.
This map shows the streets I have walked in red.  It is easy to see how many streets in Mosgiel I have walked compared to the streets that I still need to walk.
Distance walked:  8.5 km         Walking time  1 hr 30 mins

Total distance: 859.5  km          Total walking  160 hr 50 mins

Otago Harbour Cycleway 30 October 2023

With my sister in town, it seemed a shame to waste a calm, sunny day so the two of us hopped on a bike each to enjoy the recently opened 32k...
